The Magic Horse of Han Gan is a wonderful picture book which retells a famous legend from medieval China (Tang dynasty) who lived from 742 to 783. He is famous for his paintings of horses. This book, by Chen Jiang Hong tells the story of a magnificent horse, painted by Han Gan which came to life, fought in battles, and then, a saddened by the death and suffering of men and horses fled the battlefield and returned to one of Gan's painting. The illustration style imitates the traditional Tang painting of Gan and his master, Wang Wei.

There is a wonderful painting by Han Gan that now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. This is a wonderful book. Recommended for anyone with an interest in art history, or China, or both
