Song Nan Zhang is a remarkable artist with a remarkable personal story. His autobiography is told (and illustrated) in his other highly recommended book, A Little Tiger in the Chinese Night.

This book is the result of his having to spend a year in internal exile. He used the time profitably to visit the remote provinces of China and sketch and paint children. This book is a compilation of 15 stunning paintings that resulted, showing the Hui, the Han, the Mongolians, the Uygur, and others in their national costumes and settings. But one is struck overall with how much each people group has in common - and how much each loves their children.
