Made in 1964, the film stays very close to the historical facts. O'Toole and Burton both give marvelous performances. Henry II is one of the central figures for English history in the Middle Ages. He was a man of titanic abilities and ambitions - and titanic failures.

King Henry II reigns over a Medieval England festering with political conflict and occupies his days with drinking, pursuing women, and waging war. His constant cohort in these escapades is Thomas Becket. Hoping to force the Church into subservience to the Crown, Henry appoints Becket (already his Chancellor) to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury. Becket is reluctant at first, but soon experiences something he has never known before -- honor, and a cause worthy of his adoration. His singular devotion to the Church creates an enormous rift with Henry, who is devastated at being abandoned by his friend. Once his former ally becomes a rival, Henry turns to drastic measures.

remastered and re-released in 2005.
